HISTORY OF THE ABBEY YACHT CLUB

In 1962, a group of Investors & Developers called the Project Fontana, Inc., headed by Fred Gartz of Lake Geneva, developed the multimillion dollar resort complex. The 20 acres of swampland were dredged to form the Abbey Harbor, and subsequently the Abbey Hotel. The beach and roadway in Fontana were then expanded and ground was broken for the construction of the home anchorage of the Marina.

The Abbey Complex was designed and built with one thought in mind, to serve the boating community with a quiet and safe anchorage, in a setting unequalled on beautiful Geneva Lake. The Abbey Marina was opened to boaters in 1963, and currently accommodates 407 vessels. The Abbey Yacht Club was subsequently formed in 1965. In 1995 the Marina was converted to a Dockominium, at which time 185 units were sold to members of the public. The remaining 222 units continue to be available for rental through the Abbey.

Under the direction of Harbor Master Ed Snyder, the following services are for the convenience of the Abbey members, and are included with your slip.

    1) Private use of the Harbor House.
    2) Fuel Dock, and pump out services.
    3) Water, Electricity, and Garbage Collection.
    4) Weather Information and Mail Delivery Services.
    5) Abbey Yacht Club usage of the office.
    6) Private showers and restrooms.
    7) Individual private dock box.
    8) Outdoor pool and facilities.

Telephone and Cable TV services are available directly from local providers.

Available, for a fee, the Fontana Spa offers a full-service program including physical fitness, aesthetic refinement, nutrition, recreation & health enhancement, with Beauty & Barber Shops.

As proof of our continued boating life style, there are many original members that have remained current in the AYC since 1963. With this ongoing commitment to family boating fun, we look forward to many new faces to help us preserve the tradition of the Abbey Yacht Club.

Happy Boating, Skippers. Ship Ahoy!
